Short Story Ideas

The person behind the surveillance camera in my apartment complex. He watches the daily routines of all the residents and is able to build up his "perception" of who these individuals are based on what he watches through the camera.

The story of a mans wilderness/isolation experience. A story in which the individual has a out of body experience/connection with his surroundings in nature. Possibly a story about a man who isolates himself completely to the back country.

My get rich quick attempts. My friends and I are always formulating ideas to make a quick buck as poor college students.

The story of a group of friends who decide to drop everything and follow there dreams of care free living. A story about friends who want to go out and experience what they always thought to be impossible.

  1. Hey Zach. These all sound like good ideas, though I'm not really sure where exactly you plan to go with them. However, I think your second idea is my favorite. I love camping and being in the wilderness because I feel like it is nice to be away from the craziness of life and responsibility sometimes. My questions: Does anything happen during this experience? How did this man end up alone? What does he take from his isolation? Just some thoughts!

  2. I love the first one! I think you could make it hilarious! The person behind the security camera could discover something really outlandish or bad and have the moral conflict on what to do with the information. I really like this idea and think you can do a lot with it.

  3. Zach, I love the first idea. I think this would be amazing to read and fun to write. This story could have so many different characters and levels that would be interesting and fun to watch unfold. This could also be fun to write, you would have the flexibility of working with more than one general character and would be able to avoid getting stuck. I would make sure you think about what the security guard is seeing and thinking about all the different people he watches. Is he in love? Does he hate one of them? Is there a conspiracy theory that is occurring? Is there a love triangle that he is witnessing and no one is aware of but him? I think you could do a lot with this story and have some fun writing it as well! Good Job! I can't wait to read what you do!

  4. Hey Zach,
I think your ideas are great, however, the first one would be very entertaining! You could go several ways with this story. You can make it funny by just telling several stories about the tenants and how the surveillance camera man sees them. You can also make it more dramatic by giving the reader one specific person (group/couple, etc.) that lives in the apartment complex; make their story with a twist or a story in which the man behind the surveillance camera has the opportunity to do something about it (do the right thing or the wrong thing).

  5. Well, I am going to go ahead and agree with the girls above me: I think your first idea could lead to an entertaining story! You could take this story in so many directions. I particularly like the idea that the surveillance man has no idea what the people are really like, he only has his perception of them. I think it could be fun to have the ending demonstrate what the people living in the complex are really like and if the he perceived them correctly or not.

I also really like this idea, because it would take a new angle on your writing. There seems to be a common theme of nature in your writing, which is great, but I'd love to see how you approach other subjects.

All are great ideas though and I wish you luck on your story!
